milton could have went into a predictable role here in san francisco but instead he proved himself and school and the nonprofit thousands of miles away where his name had no currency. now milton and i disagreed about practically everything in politics but when he ran for the community college board i was proud of one of the non californians that contributed to his campaign and would have voted for him and probably the only contractor from my political party but i knew this because i knew milton wasn't going into service for himself but he realized he could make a difference to the community. and for all of milton's achievement and qualities family was always the most important thing. when susan's and my daughters came along he would crawl on the floor with them for hours and talked about how much he wanted to be a husband and father one day and that's why we were set r so happy when he met abbey and truly understood milton and became his rock. i will never forget the wedding in napa and abbey on the stage and raid yent in the dress and serenaded milton with "our love is here to stay".

he treasured his family and san francisco history. his grandfather the judge and his parents involved in state politics of course want his family settled in the foot hills in the 1850's and we were lucky to show the boys this gold country this past june as caro told you about and other treasured family trips we took this summer. milton was dedicating to preserve the city's history and beautiful buildings and the new mission theater and the columbo building in north beach and had pet projects and recruited his friend fred and the paintings there and you can see them and next to the brick wall next to it and turn of the century full painting. he was determined to document these and lest they not be forgotten. he wanted to create city wide -- okay, the perma stone thing was a joke but one idea was to preserve the neon signs in the tenderloin and elsewhere. he was so creative and had so many great ideas and waiting until he settled down and the kids were older to set into motion. he believed in enhancing the beauty of the city and what is

i was formally -- formerly a gang member who grew up in san francisco. we all have stories of guys involved with the gang. everyone has a different story of why they joined. my thing is, i believe it works for me to be involved with kids who were in gangs -- i worked with all of the shot colors and i had a goal while i was there. it took me 10 years before i started to transform my life. in the meantime i have the goal that i wanted to be out here. i wanted the opportunity. i was given a life sentence in 1979. i was involved in gang and i caught a murder case. 15 years to life -- and i came here in 1979 and i got out -- and i have been out for almost five years. in my heart, i knew i found a solution when i was incarcerated. and there are different stories. some of the kids joined the gangs because they want to fit into something. some of them don't have a family, and the father and mother are working. for a lot of kids, there is a lot of idle time. it is not like, i will join the gang and i will shoot you. you grow up that way, and before you know you a

obviously, san francisco is blessed with a probation chief and she told me earlier that certain people are supervised by probation and is not the general rule throughout california. i think los angeles, where i'm from, there was no supervision for misdemeanors by the probation department. those individuals were on court summary probation which meant go home and sin no more. and if you do, you'll be back here to see us. and so, i think that once again, i go back to the fact that under the current system, because we have so many of those individuals who were once incarcerated at the state level, being pushed down to the counties, there's no room at the end in terms of the county jails. so misdemeanors aren't going to be sentenced to county jail but will be sentenced in community service or whatever. and for those individuals who do need some measure of control and supervision to deal about -- deal with their conviction problems, it's not going to happen at the misdemeanor level. >> let me go to a couple of the questions from the audience. i've shared them with our district attorney. geor

for four years here in san francisco. i'm here to address the central subway construction option of north beach * . our last meeting was november 19th, which has been mentioned, when we finally had representatives of the mta present what they plan to do, and nobody in north beach had heard or agreed with any of it. so, i mentioned at that meeting that i have never missed a vote. i've been in this city for 45 years, but i couldn't remember having voted on this project. i was informed correctly that the taxpayers voted for the subway in the late 1990s for a $6 47 million expense, which is now $1.58 billion, with a b. the whole project is too little too late. and the mta has made cost cuts, but prices continue to rise. as required by the federal law, the city of san francisco must pay for all overruns on this project. i ask the mta board what are your latest project costs? and how can we continue this new project when our present and regular equipment are continually breaking down, as was mentioned yesterday when 250,000 peo
